Animal Welfare League of Scioto County, Inc.

Mission:

The Animal Welfare League was incorporated in 1985 as a non-profit animal advocacy organization devoted to improving the lives of animals in the Portsmouth area.

Programs and Services:

  • Reduced rate spay/neuter program for low and fixed-income households, offered year-round.
  • Reduced rate of pet vaccination clinics offered in May with four locations. Open to all.
  • Pet food donations to the St. Francis Catholic Outreach Center Food Pantry.
  • Straw will also be offered for winter dog houses through the Center.
  • Promote, through advertisement, World Spay Day, last Tuesday in February.
  • Working relationship with the Scioto County Dog Shelter. The Animal Welfare
  • League will be contributing to the cost of spaying/neutering locally adopted dogs from the Shelter.
  • RASCAL Unit, out of Dublin OH, is a mobile veterinary hospital offering spaying/neutering plus other services throughout the state of Ohio. The Animal Welfare League has sponsored this program with two events in 2022 and 2023 and one event in 2024.

Did you know:

  • The Animal Welfare League offers a year-round spay/neuter program for pets of low or fixed-income individuals.  So far in 2024, 118 pets have benefitted from this program.

  • Rascal Unit events began in March 2022.  From then until now, 155 pets have been spayed or neutered.  In 2024, the Scioto Foundation graciously gave the League a grant to help with costs.  Events are held at the 2nd Presbyterian Church, Waller Street, Portsmouth OH.

  • As of May 2023, the League has been able to resume yearly reduced-rate Vaccination clinics.  In 2024, two clinics were held and 116 pets were vaccinated and/or heartworm tested.

  • St. Francis Outreach Food Pantry donations began in March 2015.  So far in 2024, the League has provided the pantry with cat and dog food for 220 households.  Appreciated was a grant from Portsmouth Area Ladies, Inc. to help with our purchases.  In the cold months, the League also provides straw vouchers through St. Francis Outreach for dog houses.

  • A one-day event in December, Santa and his elves give away 100 bales of straw to families or individuals to help with outdoor pet housing.  The event was held at Portsmouth Feed and Supply, 240 Second Street, Portsmouth OH.
